The *Sammie "The Giant" Valens Story*:

I first met Sam when he was born, what with him being my brother and everything. Since 1997 he's accompanied me in such "interesting" musical ventures as Nice Little Dog and Bucketful of DeNiro. Since summer 2001 he's been doing lead vocals in my absence. Rachel's departure (we think!?) from the band left a gap for another creative titan to fill, and we figured that The Giant just complements the mentality of the band perfectly (read: he is a cretin like the rest of us). That's pretty much it. First line-up change in our history. Feels like we're the Ramones or something. It's a shame we're not, really. (WD)

The History:

I met all of the band over a couple of weeks in October 1999. We met at different times, due to different band T-shirts. Sebby, Dave and I practised in my kitchen and it’s a miracle that they didn’t walk out then. But they stayed on, and Pete, Rachel and Jo were thrown in and the rest, as they say, is… unfortunate.

First couple of gigs were dire. Anyone out there who caught either of those shows, we are still offering compensation and damages for the trauma you must have suffered on those nights. I had this kinda crappy bleached perm haircut and stood rooted to the spot, growling out the vocals while Jo and Rach stood at the side and smoked, and the band did their best with the weak songs.

I hope that you think we’ve gotten better since those dark days, but well, we couldn’t have got much worse. The future is looking a bit hazy. I’m f**king off to Berlin next year so our gigging will be a little more sporadic until summer 2002, but to be honest we’ll probably end up playing just as much as we did this year. Hopefully the rest of the band will get their arses over to the continent so we can do our thing for the Germans, the Dutch, or whoever else is willing to listen.
